Adult Art Therapy

For many adults it is difficult to tap into the creative process. In therapy sessions I help adults let go of judgment, learn to trust in themselves, enjoy play and creating, overcome resistance and accept themselves fully. We explore the conditioning that makes it so hard to let images spontaneously arise. When adults feel comfortable I offer art materials (markers, pastels, paints, collage material, clay) and suggest creating an image of the issue he or she is exploring. I observe the art process quietly and usually give a time frame. The process of creating is healing in itself. It strengthens self-esteem, self-awareness and gives a sense of mastery. The product is not the main focus in art therapy. Nevertheless, the product can be used as a tool for further insight and awareness.
